The news report about Renault's alleged plans to quit the premium segment, following a publication in Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, is not true. Although the Vel Satis will not have a direct successor, it does not mean that the French brand is set to quit the segment altogether.
Under the Renault Commitment 2009 plan, announced on February 9, 2006, sales of vehicle models in the price range over EUR 27,000 are set to double, growing from 100,000 to 200,000 units between 2005 and 2009. The Vel Satis will not have a direct, similar-looking replacement. The all-new Laguna will be the first step for Renault to gain a stronger foothold in the premium market segment. Other newcomers that are being planned will differ from regular premium-segment models, for Renault wants to offer product that is intended to satisfy diverse customer tastes, also based on the RSM.
According to the Renault Commitment 2009 plan, 26 models are set to be launched. 13 of them will be replacements for existing Renault vehicles, while the other 13 will be brand-new releases, including those positioned in the premium segment.
